08/18/2007 - What is this place?
So you found the site, you have the NZB... but now what?

First step is to get a Newsgroup provider we recommend the following three

Giganews - www.giganews.com
Giganews is the best newsgroup provider available today, providing unlimited downloads, uncensored newsgroups, 200 day retention, up to 20 connections (10 on most accounts) and encrypted access. The only downside is it is higher priced.

Newshosting - www.newshosting.com
Newshosting is another great provider with good completion rates and speeds. They have 2 different unlimited services, one with 45 day retention priced at an affordable $15 / month and one with 70 day retention at $20 / month. Both are great deals and offer unlimited downloads, uncensored newsgroups and 8 concurrent connections.

Powerusenet - www.powerusenet.com
Powerusenet is another alternative with a great service. They offer 2 different unlimited services. The first at $15 a month, only allows 4 connections and has 55 days retention. The second at $20 a month offers 8 connections and 75 days retention. They also offer unlimited downloads, uncensored newsgroups and 105 day retention.

The above are 3 of the best newsgroup providers available, and will help get you started and ensure you have a great newsgroup experience. Those providers that are less expensive often limit download speeds, offer less connections, censor newsgroups so you don't have access to what you need, along with many other poor qualities.

*Note: Retention dates last updated August 18, 2007.

11/02/2007 - Database Upgrades?
We are going to be doing some maintenance on our database server today. Which will involve a redesign of the way the database currentely is storing it's information. While we are going to try to keep the site online throughout this scheduled maintenance We felt the need to post and inform our users that there will be inaccurate / incomplete results periodically throughout the day as we re-index groups etc.

As always, thanks for supporting gotNZB and we apologize for this necessary maintenance.
08/27/2007 - ATTENTION USERS!
While gotnzb strives to maintain it's level of free service, recently we had to force user registration in order to continue to serve the content.

It was because of this that we had to change some of our cookie settings for the user authentication. If you are experiencing difficulties logging in, please clear your temporary internet files and delete all cookies to remedy this problem.

If you are continuing to have problems logging in after clearing your cookies etc, please send an e-mail to admin@gotnzb.com so we can further assist you in being able to login.

In site news, we have added some new categories to the listing in order to serve you better. If you have some more that you would like to see please post in our forums and let us know. We are always trying to make this site as good as it can be for the community we have established.

You may also notice that we have added stats and adspace to the navigation panel. Obviously a site like this can't stay free without advertisements, and hey everyone loves stats. We are working towards some new site features (Number of times an NZB has been downloaded, most popular NZB's and user level 'hot' lists). All of these features we hope to have implemented in the coming weeks. Thanks again for using the site and we hope it can service all of your NZB needs.
07/14/2007 - Newsleecher changes some features!
Due to the vast number of erotic/adult related usenet groups indexed by SuperSearch, we've changed the SuperSearch categories a bit.

SuperSearch now has two main categories: "General" and "Erotica". Basically all erotic related articles indexed by SuperSearch, will be put into the "Erotica" category, and the rest will be put into the "General" category.

The new "Erotica" category replaces/merges the old "Pictures" category, so it will be possible to search the new category from within current releases of NewsLeecher, by selecting the "Pictures" SuperSearch category. Future releases of NewsLeecher will of course reflect the changes to the SuperSearch categories.

The new category has been introduced, because we've noticed that nearly half of all groups indexed by SuperSearch are erotica/adult related(!). So it definitely seems like there is a need for such a category. We are planning on introducing various SuperSearch filters in the future, which will make it easier to find specific article types, such as mp3 files, pictures, etc., within the two main categories.

Notice that the category changes only apply to articles indexed by SuperSearch from now on. Articles which were indexed before todays date, will still belong to the categories where they were originally indexed.

07/12/2007 - 200 Days Binary Newsgroup Retention at Giganews
Giganews has completed its third significant storage upgrade of the year which will increase binary retention day by day through the end of the summer to 200 days! Giganews continues to hold text newsgroup articles indefinitely and as a result Giganews' retention in text newsgroups is well over 1400 days.

This latest upgrade comes just two months after Giganews announced 120 day retention in binary groups and only four months after Giganews announced 100 day retention in binary newsgroups.

"This recent push to 200 days retention fits into our normal cycle of perpetual upgrades. Traditionally we haven't increased retention by as large a margin as we are during this current upgrade; however, we have decided to accelerate our upgrade cycle so that we can continue to lead Usenet and provide more value for our customers. By nearly doubling our storage capacity Giganews is investing in our service so our customers can continue to enjoy the best Usenet experience possible." said David Vogelpohl, Giganews' Vice President of Marketing and Sales.

This retention upgrade follows closely after a series of additional security offerings, utility releases, and other value additions to the Giganews service.

Encrypted Usenet Access
In late 2006, Giganews deployed 256-Bit SSL Encrypted Usenet Access over port 563, which was quickly expanded to offer support over port 443. 256-Bit SSL encryption allows Giganews customers to browse and download headers and articles in a private, secure, and anonymous environment with similar performance they would expect from an unsecured connection. Encrypted Usenet access is included with all Diamond accounts and can be added as an upgrade to all other accounts.

Retention
Thanks to Giganews' recent upgrade, binary article retention will grow from 120 days to 200 days over the coming weeks. Customers will not need to make any configuration changes to enjoy increased retention.
